PostSubject: What was lost (Horror, gore, violence, probably some others too)   Mon Apr 27, 2015 2:24 am

[Continuing right on from the signup]

Her sacrifice, that's why the lot of you are alive right now, and looking out over the toxic city of Canterlot, sealed behind the layered barrier required to contain the toxic gas. Now that a moment has passed, and the late princess has as well, one can take in the sights of where they are. It appears to be the remnants of an old store, presumably on Lake Gravel lane, but one can't be certain for even if the street signs existed, none could see down onto the ground level/first floor (roughly 10ft off the ground), where the poisonous fog was thicker. This meant they were in downtown, well away from the residential district where everyone had been moments ago and surrounded by the monsters the fog hid as well.

The old store's roof was flat topped and with only a thin barrier acting as a border. To the north, and in two spots to the east, the border has even been destroyed so that improvised bridges could be erected and allow passage into the neighboring buildings. The north looked like another closed up business, with the bridge going through a knocked out chunk of wall on the second story out of the building's three. To the east appeared to be some kind of apartment building, with one bride leading into a room through a window, and the other leading into a hallway through another hole in the wall.

Turning attention towards the current goals though, it's no easy task set before the few who were present to receive a princess's dying wish, but there might be a few ways to accomplish it. One could always just go to the wall (what the quarantine barrier is commonly referred to) in hopes that a new survey and expeditionary team would be entering in the near future. Rumor was that they come in from time to time, but usually died off rather quickly. Most of the time, survivors just find parts of these teams later on, or possibly one shell-shocked member, but they were rare and less common in these recent times.

Another option that could rather quickly come to mind would be following up on another rumor, and that was of Loose Sprocket. Sprocket was a unicorn magi-tech specialist who'd shown up sometime after the Wall went up, and with her appearance, all kinds of rumors had started about the mysterious pony only a select few had actually seen. Everything from 'she was the actual cause of the toxic mist', to her being an affair born child of the princess's flew wide and fast within the city. Yet the facts remained that if Sprocket ran a large portion of what went on in the city. She had more weapons, more bits, and more muscle under her control than any other, and it was rumored that she was even held up in the old castle ruins, where the fog was thickest, and the monsters the most dangerous.

Still, choices could be made and neither of those options could be chosen in favor of simply wandering through part of the city in search of yet other ways to get the paper out. Though Sprocket's place was to the north, and the Wall was simply all around. No matter which way was chosen though, getting off the roof would likely be a first priority and that meant going either north or east for the moment since no improvised bridges to the other directions existed and there didn't appear to be a way into the building the group was currently on.

Star sighed as he took the scroll and put it in his saddle bags. He looked at Twilight's dead body with a sad expression before turning away. "Farewell princess..." He said quietly. It clearly hurt him to say it, but he can't think about it now. He had a request that he was going to follow through till the end even if he died. It was a dying mare's wish and who was he to not grant that wish. He shook his head a little and looked around the area, glancing at the others on the roof with him.

He figured they could figure out a way to grant Twilight her request while they got off the roof. He turned towards the east side of the roof and started to walk towards the two bridges there. "So...You guys have any ideas?" He said to the other ponies on the roof as he looked at the apartment building then ad the bridges. He glanced over at the bridge on the north end of the roof before turning around and facing the ponies. "North, east, window, or hole. I vote we go to the east with the hole in the wall."

Sharp simply stared at the unmoving and lifeless body of the recently departed princess, completely and utterly shocked with how the recent events had transpired. “Princess Twilight Sparkle… is dead?” she asked aloud, as if not believing what she had just told herself. Sharp moved towards the princess, a pony who she had idolized for most of her life, and nudged her. “Princess… Wake up. You can’t be dead… You’re Twilight Sparkle…” she said, her voice the epitome of heartbreak. Another nudge. “Come on… Wake up.” Sharp pleaded through a  sniffle.

Of course, it wouldn’t matter how much the mare hoped and begged… Twilight Sparkle was dead. “It wasn’t worth it…” Sharp mumbled, barely holding back her tears.  Star’s question and opinion went largely ignored by the mare, she had bigger concerns.  Twilight was dead, and, she wasn’t… It wasn’t fair. This was Equestria. Princesses didn’t die in Equestria. The fog, the monsters, the helplessness she felt while watching her beloved Princess’ last moments. None of it was fair.

“She’s just sleeping, right?” Sharp asked quietly, staying at the body’s side. She was well aware of her question’s stupidity, but, she didn’t care. She was hurting. Reality and logic could go buck themselves.

Verde Tin sighed as a tendril of magic wraps around a small knob on the back of her respirator mask and turns it, pulling the rubberized seal around it slightly tighter before shaking her head. "Bucking waste, all of this," she comments in a voice that sounds slightly gravelly and monotone through the precautions she's taken. Heavily-sewn joints in her rubber-impregnated suit, rubberized foam to seal areas against penetration by the toxin, and a light mesh of metal over it all to prevent tearing. She looks to the stunned Sharp and closes her eyes tightly for several moments, breathing in a steady and measured pace to suppress her own reaction to what just occurred, before she walks over to the mare and drapes a leg over her shoulders. "She is," she says gently. "But not the sleep that you ever wake up from. The only mercy left to her, my friend, is that this evil mist doesn't desecrate her and turn a gentle and good scholar who only wanted to help others into a feral monster." She circles around in front of Sharp and presses the end of her muzzle to the other mare's so they're looking eye to eye. "And the only way we can do right by her and honor what she has done for us is do as she asked, and take the message to the others."

She looks over to Star. "Personally, I'd prefer to go east as well. There is only good portent in walking towards the sunrise, and good portent is something we desperately need right now."

Despite Sharp's words, nudges, and tears, the body didn't move. Even with the relatively minor act of just tightening a knob, Verde would still feel the magic draining effects of the thin fog at their altitude, making something so simple actually somewhat trying.

As Star took point, going through the hole in the wall and leading the others across the improvised bridge of a few planks of old decrepit looking wood. Inside the third floor of the neighboring apartment building, the hallway continued on for a short ways before coming to a 'T' section. Three pairs of doors marked the way towards the section, while all but the middle one on the right side was boarded up. That middle door however had extra rubber flaps around it's edges and a large 'S' painted on the board side of it to mark that door as a safe zone with breathable air.

Past that though, or well at the 'T' section, the left hallway was rather abrupt with only one door at the end of the short distance. The right side however had more doors farther down it, four in total with the second and third ones missing their doors entirely while the other two were boarded up like the the others. The hallways themselves were obviously contaminated, the old wall paper that had been used to decorate the scene was faded, discolored, and seemed to almost be melting in places as time and the gas wore down on it. At the end of the hallway, the hallway turned left again but also continued forward just far enough to reveal another set of stairs leading both up and down.

The safe zone would be of the standard makeup, with a quarantine chamber right at the door so ponies stepped in and closed the door behind them, waited a minute or two for the automated pumps to force all the contaminated air out while pumping in fresh air, and would then be free to press onward into the room.

Star just looked at Sharp, barely any emotion registering on his face. He was trained to hide his emotions. It had been his job. He sighed and shook his head at the mare. "She's sleeping." He said nodding. "And because she is sleeping, I know Luna will keep her safe." He said quietly as he bowed his head a little. He listened to what Verde said quietly. "Aye. Honer her wishes and to do that we have to get moving. So please follow miss." He said in a gentle tone, a little bit of regret and sadness behind it. He turned towards the east and started to walk across the bridge into the build. Once inside the building he eyed the door with an S painted on it. He turned to the others with a shrug. "Safe zone. We can stop for a bit in there and think about how we are to follow the princess's wishes." He said, gesturing to the door. If they wanted to go inside, he would let them go in first then go in himself.

Verde patted Sharp on the shoulder before looking down at the still form. "Rest well, Princess Sparkle... we will carry your word to your friends," she says gently to the corpse before turning and following Star. "You need not pretend that it doesn't cut you deeply," she says to him as she walks. "It's better that you mourn now and weep the pain out while we're safe and there is no immediate danger, rather than let it cut you down when all seems lost and only a clear mind can save us. It's worse because it's so senseless, because this mist has no will or evil intent... it's just a force of nature, without motive or malice, distilled evil hanging in the air without the ability to anything but victimize. To push it all down and pretend to feel no pain at all is foolish. So when we are languishing in safely, make sure to have yourself a good cry and demand to know why good ponies have to die, and break some things, because the pain is better vented now than later."

She takes his silent proffer to let her go in first, which she immediately does. She then follows her own advice, taking off her mask with another expenditure of precious font, and rests her forehead against a wall slightly tilted to a side, and then begins to silently weep for the princess laying alone and cold in the remorseless fog, and the suppressed pain of Star, and the heart-breaking sadness she saw in Sharp.

Verde’s comforting words prompted a hug from Sharp. She wrapped her hooves around the other mare, and pulled tightly, holding on for a brief moment. She let go, getting up with the mare and nodding sadly when Verde explained their goal. Sharp understood, there were things more important than her grief… things the princess expected her to get done, and by Celestia, she vowed, they would be.

Of course, she was by no means over the princess’ death, she wasn’t even sure if she ever would be, but still she followed the two. As they crossed the bridge, Sharp glanced down to the bottom. Part of her really did wonder if a fall from---- No. She wouldn’t… would she? Sharp shook those thoughts out of her head as she finished crossing. She made her way into the room shortly after Verde. She quickly undid the seals on whatever protection she had been wearing, carefully placing it on the nearby ground and moved to return the favor to the other mare, albeit a little awkwardly. She pat the mare on the back in an attempt to be as comforting as she had been to her moments before.

The safe zone was fairly small and bleak, consisting of only one room with a sparse few piece of furniture. There was a small table in the center of the room, a few pillows and threadbare blankets in a corner, and a couple boxes/crates next to the blankets. Inside the containers, the ponies would be able to find 6 cans of food, 3 packets of dried fruits and vegetables (1 mixed, 1 apple, 1 carrots), and 5 water containers that were fairly full. Back near the door, a single lantern hung on a rusty old nail with a few matches near it. Light from the outside only barely managed to enter the space, and really barely gave enough light to even see the lantern by. One however could probably tell that the sun was setting soon as what little light was present was slowly receding.

As is custom, survivors tended to live by a general code of taking some and leaving some if they could. At the very least, never taking all the supplies since everyone needed some help to live in the hellhole that was the current Canterlot. Of course, there was only the other 2 ponies in the safe zone to enforce such a code, and that's if they didn't agree that the circumstances had changed... Still, would it be worth it to possibly condemn other survivors who might seek this shelter out of desperation? Regardless, the sun was setting on this dreadful day with the 3 ponies resting and crying in the relative safety of the sealed up form the gas room.

Star listened to Verde, but he didn't say much other than one sentence. "Who said I was pretending?" Once they got into the room, he took off his mask and attached it to his saddle bags. He then looked around for a moment before at the two mares as they cried and comforted each other. He just shook his head a little at the two. It hurt him sure enough and it was probably true that he shouldn't bottle up the sadness, but they had to keep going.

So while the two dealt with their emotions, he would trot over to the containers next to the blankets and look inside them, keeping a stoic face as well as any guard would have. He was very much aware of the general code of taking some and leaving some as he carefully looked over the contents in the box. He looked over at the two mares then back at the food and water. He slid off his saddle bags and put in three cans of food, one packet of dried fruit, and three water containers. He figured that would be enough for all three of them, plus he wasn't taking all of it. He slid on his saddlebags and trotted back over two, sitting down a far distance away from them. "The sun is setting." He commented, looking around the room and noticing how dark it was.

"I...grabbed some food and water for us. For when we get back out there and start traveling again." He just sighed and leaned against the wall, closing his eyes. How had he ended up here? Alive? With these two mares? He had so many questions about his life, about everything really. Why was it Twilight who died and not one of them? Why was he alive at all even? Why did ponies die? He sometimes wished that he could be with his old friend again...be a colt. In his mind, the tough royal guard him told him to buck up, but at the same time, the colt him wanted to sit there weeping for the rest of eternity. He finally decided he wasn't going to weep. He would push through it till the end then weep. He opened his eyes again and walked over to the pillows and blankets. He took them and brought them back to Sharp and Verde.

Verde accepts Sharp with a warm hug and lets herself weep for a few minutes before she straightens and takes a breath, fishing a cloth out of a sealed saddlebag with her teeth and cradling it on her foreleg so she can dry her tears on it before returning it to its place. "That's much better," she says after a moment, giving Sharp and Star encouraging smiles. "Much better to get the grief out now rather than carry it as we fight for life in this city." She releases the catch on a saddlebag. "I could carry some of that food and water, Mister Sentinel, so you don't become overburdened."

Sharp nodded at Verde’s comment. “Too bad grief can’t be quantified” she thought to herself. When Star brought over the pillows and blankets, she took them, thanking him and going off into a corner to lie down. Sharp assumed that since they sun was setting, they’d sit and spend the night in the relative safety of the saferoom, an assumption that turned into a bit of a hope with a yawn. “I’ll help carry supplies too, if you’d like” she offered from her spot in the corner.

Truth be told, Sharp dreaded the moment when she’d fall asleep that night. She was deathly afraid of the nightmares that would no-doubt follow witnessing the death of the late princess. Horrible dreams of Twilight becoming another one of those monsters… of her own mask failing. Sharp shuddered. It didn’t matter how much she wanted to avoid it, the events of the day were taxing for her. She needed to sleep now, lest she faint outside.

Night came quickly for the quarantined city, for light already had a hard time piercing the fog and barrier even when it was abundant. As the sun set, shadows grew quickly, and night came early for the forsaken citizens within the walls. And with the dark came an eerie silence that resided over the town. No one was sure if the abominations that prowled the streets slept, but the fear of them not usually gave more than enough reason for any and all to keep as silent as possible, lest they attract undue attention to themselves. For the moment at least though, the little safe room was living up to it's name sake as no outside noises could be heard getting louder, and the seals were doing their job at keeping out the toxins that had claimed far too many.

Star grunted out a slight your welcome when Sharp had thanked him for the pillow and blanket. He then looked at the two mares and then at his saddle bags. "Hmm...Yeah I suppose you both can help." He said as he took out two cans of food and two water containers. He nudged one can and one container over to Verde and took the other can and container over to Sharp. He then looked at the mare for a minute before shaking his head. "You two should get some rest. I'll keep an eye open and wake you two if something happens. It'll just be like before this gas, guarding at night and staying in one spot for hours on end." He said with a slight smile before sighing. He sat down and leaned his back against the wall as his eyes roamed around the room. "Hmm...You know, maybe I'll wake one of you to take my spot when I get tired. I'm going to need some rest to." He said quietly with a blank face.

Sharp took both the can of food and the water container into her magical grasp, setting them near her corner. She didn’t need to be told twice about getting some rest, simply nodding when Star told them they should, and again when he said he may need to wake one of them up to get some rest of his own.  Sharp curled up into a comfortable position on her pillow, floating the blanket that Star had given her over herself and closing her eyes. The sooner she got to bed, the sooner she would wake up…

First post here, here goes nothing.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dust stepped into the chamber outside the safe room, having wandered for a while. She was running low on supplies, and her moderate amount of bits were probably worthless at this point. At least her gas mask, fitted for unicorns, was intact.

She quickly closed the door and locked it for now. She didn't exactly want anyone...or anything...following her. The chances were slim, but it never hurts to be cautious.

Inside the room, the telltale hiss of the air being removed and then replaced could be heard easily.

Star's ears flicked a bit to the sound of someone else entering the room. He turned to the door and watched the pony carefully, looking them up and down to make sure they wouldn't hurt them. Once he had done that he would nod at them, say a quick hello and lay down. He kept a close eye on the pony though incase they were to do anything. For now though, he might as well make himself comfortable. It was going to be a long night for him.

Verde found a corner of the room clear of the two doors to lay down in, resting her head on the floor and seeming oddly comfortable in her suit. It took her long enough to get to sleep that when the airlock hissed and Dust stepped through, she raised her head to look. "Hello there," she said to the new pony. "Just stopping by our little haven from Tartarus, are you?"

When the doors opened and Dust could enter the room, she'd see the other three ponies and deal with their greetings in kind. Nothing in the room though changed, nor did anything outside the room to best knowledge of the ponies that were inside it. Night however was in full swing, and the eerie silence continued in the veil of the dark as most tried to remain as quiet as they could.

But then the night passed, and morning came as slowly as it usually did to those within the quarantine. The walls just simply kept the light at bay longer, that was just a simple fact. Still, light streamed in and while it didn't penetrate the interior of the building well, it offered enough ambient light that one could tell it was light outside. If that proved to not be enough though, the fact that other noises were beginning to resound out signaled that other ponies had begun to become active without fear of disturbing the quiet peace of the night.

Star had woken up Verde when it was a couple hours before dawn to take up watching while he took a quick nap. Now with the sun out, Star was just barely waking up as he yawn rather loudly. He stood up and stretched before looking at the ponies in the room. He paused for a moment when his gaze fell on Dust. He shook his head a little and trotted over to Sharp and nudged her a little with his hoof. "Wakey wakey, miss." He said quietly as he stepped back. "We should really figure out what we should do now." He said, looking at Sharp and Verde.

Sharp, despite her pessimistic expectations, had managed to sleep through the entirety of the night relatively soundly. Perhaps Princess Luna had taken to looking after the poor souls trapped within Canterlot, then again, the barrier was said to be impregnable… Maybe she was just lucky, then. Either way, she was well rested.

“Mmm.” Sharp groaned as she was brought back to the land of the more-or-less aware by Star Sentinel’s gentle ministrations. “Oh…” she yawned, looking around the room. Dust’s existence surprised her slightly, a fact she demonstrated with some minor eye-widening. “Oh. Uhh. Hi.” Sharp said in slightly woozy greeting.

Verde opens her eyes at Star poking at Sharp and watches him with her ears canted in his direction. "I propose we make lots of tracks between us and this hellhole," she says before turning her head left and right with twists, popping a few joints to get the kinks out after having fallen asleep in an awkward position. "Princess Sparkle represents a lot of power and I have a suspicion, with no particular proof, that a pony of that magical magnitude being snuffed out will have metaphysical repercussions that might draw truly monstrous creatures in our direction. Assuming that fate is merciful and lets Twilight Sparkle remain at rest."

Dust had slept in a corner, rather peacefully all things considered. Getting up slowly, her joints also popped. "Hi," she said back. She had no clue who said it, but replied anyway.

The unicorn raised a brow upon hearing Verde's speculations. "I saw her corpse on the way here. She's still dead, don't worry about it."

The sudden hiss of air being replaced and the sounds of the rubber seals opening and then closing in the decontamination chamber signaled the arrival of somepony new. The figure didn't enter the room however until after a sufficient amount of time had passed for the contaminated air to be replaced with new clean air. When the figure entered, it's face was at first obscured by the thick, full mask it wore, but any secrecy it may have provided for the pony's expression was betrayed by it's body language as the new pony reared back slightly at the presence of four ponies it obviously hadn't been expecting to see in the room.

The pony itself was clad in the old armor of a guard pony, but the shine of the once proud and strongly symbolic armor had long since been replaced with a dull gleam and the slight glisten of a thick coating of oil which no doubt was used to not only offer some protection from the effects of the gas and help mask the pony's scent from the infected monsters outside. Under that armor was an unknown number of thick layers of thick cloth that hid most of it's hide from sight. The only bits of the pony that could be seen were the red and purple mane and tail, and the rather un-pony like ruby scaled wings that rested at it's sides. A little gasp could be heard from the mask, but the distortion made it still difficult to tell what exactly was under all that gear.

Regardless of whether the pony was a stallion or mare, in the next moment eight swords seemed to form and pull themselves out of the shadows near the new arrival, floated to about chest level, and while staying close to the new arrival, pointed outwards towards the four that were already in the room. "I don't want any trouble," the new pony said nervously, "but who are all of you?"

Star looked over at Verde and nodded. "You're right. We should get moving soon then." He said to her before glancing over at Dust. "Don't worry about it you say...I think there is more things to worry about then just a dead princess." He muttered quietly to himself. He paused as his ears perked up at the sound of air hissing. He turned to the door and watched it closely. When the pony walked out, he carefully eyed up the pony to make sure they weren't going to hurt them. Once he did that he sighed and leaned back against the wall. "We don't want any trouble either. As to your question...We're just ponies trying to survive in this hell hole..." He said simply, looking over at the pony. He couldn't help but stare at the pony's armor for a few moments. "You use to be a royal guard before...you know...this happened?" He asked, raising an eyebrow at the pony.
